Picking a Car Seat

All car seats sold in the U.S. meet the same federal safety standards. Pick the car seat that fits your car, your child and your budget. Head to a store that has sample seats out (Target, Walmart, Buy Buy Baby, for example) to play with the seats before deciding.

Check out Safe Kids Worldwide’s website, Ultimate Car Seat Guide, for tips and tricks to help your child stay safe in the car through the ages!

Installing Your Car Seat

More than half of car seats are installed wrong. Working with a certified Car Seat Technician can ensure your child(ren) is as safe as possible while riding in the car.

Colorado Laws versus Best Practice

Colorado laws are bare minimum. To ensure maximum safety we want to follow best practice. This includes keeping a child rear-facing as long as possible (at least two years of age, longer if they have not outgrown the car seat).

 Used and Expired Car Seats

All car seats have an expiration date, most are between 6 and 10 years. If it is not expired, it is recommended to pass on car seats to family and friends so everyone knows the history. Purchasing a car seat from a secondhand store, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or at a garage sale is not recommended as the history may not be known or revealed honestly. These seats may have been in a crash, recalled or missing pieces.

Recycling Old Car Seats

**Colorado State Patrol is no longer taking car seats to be recycled.**
